Mary Meeker on 5 trends in mobile Internet

Mary Meeker, Morgan Stanley's analyst and more popularly known as the "Queen of the Net" has come out with her yearly Internet analysis. I have been following her Mary Meeker 2009 Slides for the past Internet Trends031808meeker and she has been consistently giving valuable insights both of investors and of techies alike.    #-Link-Snipped-#
Source: Morgan Stanlay ResearchTargeted at the US markets, most of her data is on the developed countries, but India does feature in her presentation (below). India along with 4 other countries account for 48% of web users across the world. With a year on year growth of 23%, India definitely is a hot spot for web.

The findings are backed up solid analysis and data spread across past technology trends (miniaturization of devices, internet timing and development patterns, technology cycles, and interface evolution). Overall, the accelerated growth of mobile internet is due to 5 different trends –

  • 3G
  • Social Networking (Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, the list goes on)
  • Video
  • VoIP (Applications like Fring, Skype, Google Voice)
  • Impressive mobile devices (Kindle, iPad, iPhone, Android, Nexus, Nokia E series)
Mary Meeker has gone in-depth in all the 5 trends and forecasted high growth for mobile internet users (10 billion machines will go online by 2011). Where does that put us? In India, things are fast catching up; 3G auctions are going on, we already have a huge population on social networking sites. All the trends that have been predicted to contribute to increase in mobile internet usage are picking up in India. That is across the country and not just the metropolitan areas. With celebrities like #-Link-Snipped-# leading the way for heavy usage of internet on mobiles, all the other smart phone touting, photo clicking, fast typing celebrities are putting their content across the net. Fans are soon to follow. Where else will you get a chance to have a chat with your favorite celebrity other than the internet? Internet trends will surely go the mobile way in India as well. I will not be surprised if we see our own CE mobile application pretty soon.
