Mars Science Laboratory Spacecraft's Biggest Trajectory Maneuver On Jan 7

Just when space agencies all over the world are hunting for traces of life, NASA's #-Link-Snipped-# is heading towards Mars. To reach its destination 'Gale Crater' on mars, America's top space agency will change the trajectory of the spacecraft and is touted to the biggest for this #-Link-Snipped-#.

#-Link-Snipped-#, scheduled on 11 January is well planned. This will take place with the help of eight thruster engines which will be fired sequentially. The activity will change the magnitude of initial velocity by 12.3 miles per hour. The maneuver is expected to be completed in 175 minutes. The proceedings will start on 3 P.M PST.

Earlier, scientists found that it was impossible for the spacecraft to have correct trajectory in first attempt itself. The problem was about the upper stage. If the spacecraft was launched straight in the direction of Mars, there was a possibility of upper stage hitting the planet. It was hence decided to change the direction of space vehicle from time to time. The spacecraft is slated to land on Gale Crater on August 5 and five more maneuvers are expected till the end of its journey. Before landing on red planet, NASA is thinking for series of checks and tests of its instruments. The tests will start on 15 Jan.

The mission is planned to search for#-Link-Snipped-#. The space vehicle is currently cruising and will have covered 352-million-mile till 9 A.M PST on Jan 7. The project team is keeping a close watch on the details of this space craft. NASA is banking heavily on this mission and has equipped it with Radiation Assessment Detector to detect interplanetary radiation environment. The data received from this mission will be crucial for scientists all over the world to plan their future space activities related to mars. The present maneuver, if successful, will be a step forward for Mars Science Laboratory Spacecraft in reaching the planet.
