Lufthansa Airbus A340-300 May Get New Coating To Save Fuel

Germany's biggest airline, Lufthansa has let two of their Airbus ships to take part in an experiment to try a new coating that may reduce the fuel consumption during flight. The Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials (FAM), in association with Airbus has developed a new type of coating that mimics the skin of fast swimming sharks - and may reduce the fuel consumption by reducing the surface resistance.

Engineers have discovered that if the aircraft is coated with 40-70% with the new paint, the fuel consumption reduces by one percent. That still is a great benefit considering the growing concern for raising fuel costs and environment. Growing interest from airlines and aircraft manufacturers may help accelerate surface technology related studies and research.
