In the pursuit of endless information about the cosmic energy reaching earth, NASA has achieved a different milestone. NASA's Super-TIGER scientific balloon has broken the longest flight record, after having spent more than 55 days flying over Antarctica.

The Super-TIGER balloon was lifted to an altitude of 127,000 feet, where it spent 55 days, one hour and 34 minutes flying over Antarctica  beating a previous record set in 2009. The balloon was mainly sent to gather information about the cosmic rays hitting the earth from the deep corners of the universe.

The balloon's flight proved to be a successful one due to the long duration in air, which helped in collecting more data. The flight was aided by the South Pole's wind patterns, circulating east to west in the counter-clockwise direction.

Scientific balloons have always given scientists critical scientific data at lower costs for a long duration. This mission brought back a lot of helpful data, which would take NASA up to two years to fully analyze.
