As the world gets obsessed with the green, electric cars; everyone knows that the old school internal combustion (IC) engines aren't dying anytime soon. In the developing countries, the IC engines are going to be popular for at least a decade. LiquidPiston is in the process of making a quieter, smaller and more efficient diesel engine and it's going to be called the 'X2'. The company has been around for several years. LiquidPiston got started as the father son duo won the MIT business plan competition. Take a look at the photo of the X2 engine; it looks much smaller than the traditional diesel engine. The company says that they're hoping for 20 - 50% improvement in efficiency.

LiquidPiston aims to make the engine available for beta testing in the first quarter of 2013. The X2 is a rotary engine that boasts of a new architecture that made it possible for the team of 12 employee team to reduce the size. CEO of LiquidPiston, Alexander Shklonik says that the X2 is very flexible and that makes it possible to make it more efficient by proper tuning. Shklonik says that their new engine uses 10 times fewer parts. Quite an engineering achievement, we must say!

The engine however won't make it to the automobile industry right away. The company plans to see the engine being used in military vehicles, plug-in vehicle range extenders, long haul trucks etc. LiquidPiston has raised $12.3 million in funds so far and is aiming to raise about $20 million in this year.

We wish the team all the best and look forward to real world applications of X2.
