I am planning to build a linear motion arm using servomotor/stepper motor.
anyone has any ideas?any help is much appreciated.

maybe you can used this few simple components.

Stepper motor,shaft, pinion and rack.

hey you can control stepper motor by using micro controller .

linear hydraulic actuators may be used for linear motion instead of servo motors.If servo can only be used ,use stepper motor with pinion connected to motor shaft.pinion rotates to move toothed rack to give linear motion.
