Light Beams Instead Of Wires Under Car Bonnet - University Of Warwick

University of Warwick researchers have presented their recent work based on optical wireless technology that aims to replace the wires inside your car's bonnet with light beams. In order to build a super light-weight car design such that it is also fuel-efficient, these researchers have experimented with the wireless optics for communication between engine parts such as temperature system and engine management system; or between the brakes and the vehicle speed control systems. Presenting their in-depth study of the potential replacement of current system at the International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks, the researchers showed how such a wireless system can be installed into the overhead lights above the passenger seats to send multimedia content for in-car entertainment.

A significant advantage of optical wireless technology over RF Communication is the unlimited and unregulated spectrum that it has. Replacing wires leads to losing weight and that in turn converts into lower fuel costs and increased life of the vehicle. Since its installation can be performed using just LEDs, this is definitely a cheap alternative at the moment.
