LG Wine Smart: Reviving The Flip Phone Era With Android KitKat On A Tiny Low-Res Screen

Travelling back in time to the year 2007, LG has resurrected the clamshell aka flip phone design with the LG Wine Smart. Unlike Samsung’s Samsung W789 Hennessy Android Flip Phone Launch Happens In China Samsung Galaxy Golden Flip Phone Comes To Indians Willing To Pay Rs. 51,900 Samsung W2014 Is Yet Another Android Flip-Phone, But The First To Feature Snapdragon 800 range which have dual screens, one on the inside and one on the cover, LG’s mid-range offering has a standalone 3.5-inch LCD display with a HVGA (480 × 320 pixels) resolution. Sure this resolution sounds average for a 3.5inch screen but in an era of ‘bigger is better’ mindset the phone does not bode well with most people across the world. LG is fine with this idea because it has made the LG Wine Smart as a South Korea exclusive as evident from the #-Link-Snipped-#.

LG Wine Smart is being targeted to a specific age group as well. The company has added special physical buttons for IM, address book, picture gallery and camera for the elderly who struggle with touchscreen displays. The smartphone even has a ‘Safe Keeper’ function that sends out emergency messages with location data to chosen contacts in case the smartphone is unused for a set period of time. You do not have to call ‘Captain Obvious’ to tell you the purpose of this feature.

The LG Wine Smart runs Android 4.4 (KitKat) with the help of an unspecified 1.2GHz quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. LG has kept the manufacturing costs low by opting for a smaller 4GB internal memory instead of a regular 8GB ROM. Storage can be expanded with the help of a microSD card slot that gobbles up cards of up to 32GB. In the rear we find a good 8MP sensor with LED flash but on the front we get a low quality VGA sensor. The phone supports Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, and microUSB connectivity options and is powered by a user-removable 1700mAh battery. This LTE enabled smartphone measures 118.6×59.4×16.9mm and weighs 140.8 grams. The LG Wine Smart will be available in black and white colour variants. Pricing and availability information is awaited.
