LG Electronics has sought the expertise of Google to deliver free virtual reality headsets to new customers of its hugely popular flagship smartphone, the LG G3. The LG VR for G3 will be offered for free to new LG G3 customers. VR for G3 is based on the Google Cardboard project that allows tinkerers to make virtual reality headsets for their smartphones out of cardboard or buy a pre-made version from listed manufacturers. LG VR for G3 is made out of plastic instead of cardboard and boasts of certain modifications to suit the LG G3. The design allows access to the G3’s signature Rear Key layout and frees up the phone’s speaker. Users are also given the option of using their own Bluetooth headsets. Since most people find it embarrassing to bark commands at their wearable, LG employs a neodymium ring magnet on the side of the VR for G3 to work with the magnetic gyroscope sensor in the G3 to select applications and scroll through menus without voice commands or touch input.

LG takes pride in announcing that the VR for G3 does not require its own processor or display because the G3 is equipped with Quad-core 2.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and a Quad HD display that give a smoother and realistic VR experience. Customers who get their hands on this freebie will also be able to download a free VR game, Robobliteration, using the in-box QR code. The company says that they will also be able download VR-compatible apps from the Google Play store as well. We think that LG has taken the right step towards making virtual reality mainstream. Unlike Samsung’s Samsung Gear VR Lets You Experience Wireless Virtual Reality With Galaxy Note 4 which costs $200 (12456 INR), LG’s iteration is completely free. We hope other Android smartphone manufactures explore this option.

When it comes to portable virtual reality, we want to ask our readers to answer an important question, are you willing to wear a virtual reality headset in public? Head over to the comment section below to post your answers.
