Leica And Audi Design Rugged Waterproof Adventure Camera

Leica, the German adventure optics maker well-known for their expensive, yet delicate cameras and lenses, has collaborated with Audi to design a new waterproof camera that is bound to get adrenalin junkies hooked instantly. The Leica X-U is the latest in the line, and their first waterproof camera. Leica claims the X-U is capable of diving 49 feet (15 meters) underwater and still click great 16.2-megapixel photographs.

The body is made out of Aluminium and thermoplastic material, and is sealed off from dust and water alike. Leica has mounted its Summilux 23 mm prime lens on the X-U, which can deliver an aperture of f/1.7. The ISO range is 100 - 12500, which is on par with most entry-level DSLR cameras. These should take care of bad light scenarios. These specs also outweighs the fact that the lens is not interchangeable. In addition, the X-U is also shatter and shock proof, and can survive drops from about 4 feet.

The camera was imagined by Audi Design, and they have taken a minimalistic approach towards the X-U; not too many buttons as in latest DSLR cameras. The battery and memory card compartments are double-latched for environment-proofing. Replacing the viewfinder is a 3-inch LCD screen with 920,000 pixels, also enclosed in toughened screen cover.

The Leica X-U records 1080p HD videos (1920x1080) in mp4 format. The integrated flash is placed at the front, right above the lens, so as to provide the best illumination during underwater photography. There is a provision for attaching additional accessories as well. Though there adventure camera market is dominated by GoPro, and Nikon has made a grand entry with Nikon D5 Steals The Thunder At CES - Raises Bar For Canon And Olympus, the Leica X-U will still be loved for the quality of photographs it is capable of.

But however rugged and competent the Leica X-U might be, it is still beyond reach for many adventurers and enthusiasts. Just like other Leica cameras and optics, the X-U is also high-priced at $2950. But this camera solves one big problem for thrill seekers who are also photography enthusiasts. The Leica X-U is unstoppable by weather gods in bad moods.
