KJ Somaiya's Racing Car 'Arion-2' All Set To Rock Formula Student Germany (FSG)
KJ Somaiya students are all set to gear up against the best in the prestigious design competition- Formula Student Germany (FSG)- with their single-seater racing car Arion-2, which is equipped with a 600cc engine and can reach amaximum speed of 140 km/hr. It races 0-100 km in just 4.1 seconds. The car's body is crafted of carbon/glass fibre and weighs 240 kg. This time, the team has employed advanced techniques like Rapid Prototyping to achieve accuracy while manufacturing some parts. With an interactive driver interface mounted on the steering wheel plus an on-board telemetry system, the car is all prepared to rock the event.
The SAE-conducted competition shall be held from July 30 to August 4 at Hockenheimring, Germany. The contest has three static events and four dynamic events. Where the static involves design, cost and manufacturing analysis, and business plan presentation, the dynamic part is more involved with analysis of the car’s acceleration, autocross, skid pad, endurance and fuel economy.
ORI 2013, as the team is called, comprises 45 engineering students who've been sweating it out after this car since August last year. A team member, Bramath Patel says-

It takes around 10 months to conceptualise and build the car and the remaining time is used for testing and marketing activities. The car cost around Rs20 lakh, funded by the college and the sponsors pulled in by the marketing team. There are 80 teams worldwide pitched against each other, of which 6 represent India. KJ Somaiya is the first college from India to have participated in this contest way back in 2007.
