Kinect For Windows PC Priced Higher Than Kinect For XBOX. Launch On Feb 1.

With over 18 million Kinect sold in last one year, it has become the fastest selling consumer electronics product in the world. It has not only found uses at home for gaming but has also ventured into areas where even the developers of Kinect have never thought of. Going from the usual notion of using a handheld device for controlling, Kinect brought new interface by making YOU the controller.

We had #-Link-Snipped-# that Kinect would be available for PCs by 2012 and at Microsoft's #-Link-Snipped-#, the company announced the availability of Kinect for Windows from the 1st of February this year in twelve countries which includes US, Australia, Germany, Ireland, Japan, UK among others. At beginning the Kinect hardware would be available in limited quantities with a price tag of $249, which would include a year-long warranty and you would also be able to access the software support. Qualified Educational Users would be able to purchase the device at a special pricing of $149 later in the year.

The question here is, why is it priced higher than Kinect for Xbox? The explanation given here is that consumers buy Kinect supported games, subscribe to Xbox LIVE and even spend elsewhere in the Xbox ecosystem which allows Microsoft to subsidize the price of the hardware and also Kinect was exclusively built for Xbox 360, barring support when used on other platforms.

Some of the improvements for Kinect for Windows would be the 'near mode', which would allow for close-up applications enabling the camera to precisely pick up objects as close as 50 centimetres and support for gesture and voice commands for Windows 7 and Windows 8 enhancing the data capture capabilities for various industries. The SDK would be available free of charge and developers & users need not pay for the updates and license fees for using the software. However, deployment of Kinect non-commercially using the new SDK will not be permitted. The license for beta SDK has been extended for more three years till 16th June 2016 for existing non-commercial users.

So now we can expect Kinect to venture into new avenues by enriching the present technology of PC hardware. Get ready for Kinect style advanced motion gaming on your desktop!
