To see the Jesus illusion in action, stare at the four dots in the center of the image for approximately 30 seconds, then quickly divert your eyes towards a blank surface such as a wall or ceiling. You should see the image transferred to that surface.

jesus
I know it is quite an old trick.
But Can someone explain, exactly why this happens?

The information gathered by the eye is processed in the brain to give a Perception that does not tally with a physical measurement of the stimulus source. There are three main types: literal optical illusions that create images that are different from the objects that make them, physiological ones that are the effects on the eyes and brain of excessive stimulation of a specific type .
