Japan's So-Net Tells Google Fiber, "1 Gbps Ain't No Fast. 2 Gbps Is!"

We know you all were jealous when Google announced the launch of 1 Gbps Google Fiber service in Kansas City. Then it was the Startup Village in Kochi, India that got its own 1 Gbps line and we felt as if someone throwing in salt on our wounds. In the mean time a new entrant from the far east, Japan has left those 1 Gbps lines in the dust. The ISP, named So-Net, has began offering 2 Gbps line at a price of just $51 per month (for a 2 year contract). Now compare that to Google Fiber's $71 per month and think of relocating to Japan.

So-Net, the ISP backed by Japan has began rolling out the service to residents and businesses around the city of Tokyo. The company is offering an ONT (Optical Network Unit) which will convert the blazing fast optical line into broadband line. Unless the subscribers have capable hardware they perhaps won't be able to enjoy those blazing fast speeds and pause-less youTube 4K videos.

It's interesting to note that the 2 or 1 Gbps speeds aren't the fastest in the world. back in 2004, engineers achieved Internet speed record of 101 Gbps in the labs and in 2011 they could achieve 109 Tbps via fiber optics.
