Give us some time, @#-Link-Snipped-# 😀 . Science is just about discovering things that exist and giving them a meaning. It's the application of science that has proved fatal in many cases.

PS: It helps if you could write your own view when starting a new debate.

Well You created an Account on CE, Started a discussion, typed on your keyboard, sitting in front of computer on your chair and wearing some fancy clothes and sipping coffee from a cup with some fan running overhead to keep everything cool. And that justifies it I guess.

There is no humanity without science. Without science, we are no better than animals. The term humanity is carved out of a simple concept of a healthy civilization existing in harmony due to proper application of science.

You are seeing on Indian prospective only. Look at other countries also. Their culture also. And they won't agree to it. Science has actually shaped their humanity.
It is in India that we have too much socialism in our structure, in western countries they didn't/don't have that much. Science has made them open to manage things in between and schedule visits. We Indians are not adapting to it completely. We have learnt how to harvest boons of science but we have not learnt how to tackle the problems which the same science creates.

The decadance one sees around is not a result of science - it is just a tool; it's a result of absence of Philosophy - the knowledge of what is appropriate for man as Man. Think of monkey wielding an AK-47!!

Is science helpful to humanity? yes, but only as a tool. it causes more harm than good in hand of human without a philosophy( like the monkey in my example)

Science is helpful to humanity as because of science we get aware of things happening around the world and many a times that helps, like at times of calamity like Tsunami help is send not only from government but from private funding.
But every thing have its pros and cons, so does effect of science.
As rightly said by #-Link-Snipped-# AK-47 protects us from outside world when its in hands of a solder and at the same time terrifies us when in hands of terrorists.

Science is just an organized body of knowledge. It is not an entity that can do good or bad.
It is humanity (some individual humans) that apply science for good or bad.
Medicine that has saved millions of lives and which has extended longevity is science. Chemical and biological warfare, synthetic drugs and other such are the other side of that coin. Agricultural science feeds billions. Pesticides and fertilizers degrading the environment is the reverse of that field.

One can go on and on with other such examples.

Ultimately it boils down to good and bad people. A knife can cut vegetables or kill a fellow being depending on who is wielding it.

Norbert Weiner was a great American mathematician. When the atom bomb was being developed apparent ly some complex maths had to be solved. The concerned people apparently took the problem to Weiner. He looked at it and said that he could not do it. The surprised people asked if he even could not solve it. It seems he said,'I've solved it. I just don't like the answer'.
The problem was solved after much effort and the bomb made.

It is up to each of us how we develop and use science.

First we need to elaborate Humanity which is being HUMAN- a animal species on earth. So Humanity is only, and all about surviving on earth, to give better live to human and to help to survive future generations.

Humans are using science to give better life and fighting diseases, making life easier and so yes , Science is helping to "Humanity".

Actually, this has nothing to do with science. It happened because of Indian society, which wanted to move forward with backwards mentality. Till today at least half the Indian population thinks better job = more money = better boy/girl for marriage = life jhingalala and this mentality has nothing to do with science. It is primarily responsible for the rat race and selfishness - note also that half the students study "science" without any interest in it, and half of the remaining half "tolerate" science because they want to do "technology" (the two things are different). So, the real reason for that is our society. Put an effort and change yourselves, this will go away.

Well behaved and kindness is a matter of upbringing, not that of culture. You will in fact observe that scientifically advanced countries are in general much more open minded, rational and well behaved on average compared to us. Our culture is impeding our progress in science and not the other way around.

What must be understood very clearly is two things: Engineering is not Science and Technology is neither of the two. The quest for knowledge is the ultimate pursuit of truth. Without science, or technology, or engineering, we would not be having this discussion here today, nor would you live so long to even have these thoughts. It is the knowledge, the human curiosity, that brought us this far and will continue to enrich our minds with new wonders and horrors. 😀
