  • Flipkart has posted a teaser saying "Exciting times at Flipkart, we've got a brand new digital product lined up in a couple of days... can you guess what it is?", followed by a screenshot (see below). The screenshot itself doesn't reveal any information except that we tried to guess what the 'blurred' part of the screenshot said. It appears that it says "Web Reader [beta]". Followed by the words < eBook Library. Have a look & guess -

The launch of a web-based eBook reader might be a logical addition to Flipkart's digital eBook store. The company did shut off their digital music download business a few weeks ago, but the eBook store is still going strong. Plus, not many people prefer reading eBooks on smaller screens of their phones or tablets.

Our best guess is that Flipkart's launching a Web Reader for eBooks. What's your take?

    Looks like a logical guess,
The screenshot is of a e-book reader and they have tried to blurr the web reader and eBook library. Just wondering why they said it as digital product? will it be a product like Amazon Kindle? or just e-Book distribution 😐

Well it seems like a good launch. They can easily do a good business on this one. buy and read then and there it self. Also they can give you rapid support if anything goes wrong. Will help in copyrighting and privacy issues. And it will be handy. I guess they will also embed it in their "Flipkart Ebooks" Android app.

I personally dont like the idea on online reading.I prefer a ebook reader with predownloaded books as this web based books rely on internet connection.

Well, it's not clear if the web reader will be made available as a browser extension. If it is offered as an extension - it will definitely offer an offline browsing mode.

I'm also guessing they're starting a library with a monthly subscription. That way, you will be able to read any number of books (or limited number of books based on your subscription type) through a web-based reader.

I think that'd be an excellent idea!

Lets wait for the official announcement so that we can still debate on pricing on online ebook reader.

Update: As expected, Flipkart indeed has launched eBook App. It's available on iOS, Android and Windows as well. Plus there's a web based eBook reader. There's a new FlipThru feature that lets you read 10% of the book before deciding to buy it.

    Interesting, yeah!
