It looks like IRCTC should immediately get newer, powerful servers and upgrade the technology they are using to run India's Online Railway Reservation System.

"Service Unavailable" error usually comes from malfunctioning of the IIS server which breaks down when the server is unable to handle too many requests from users.

Overall, IRCTC Sucks.

PS: Correct me if I'm wrong; I think its the TCS that has developed the portal for IRCTC. One more reason that dilutes my faith in Indian Engineering.

Still unavailable. Looks like IRCTC officials are least concerned.

IRCTC has so far added 52 servers and plans to add 18 more
We have seen a peak of 13,000 hits per minute during the first 10-15 minutes from 8am. Our capacity is 1,500-2,000 successful transactions a minute.

Can anyone comment on the no of servers required...

Not just the servers, but they may need a technology upgrade as well. It could be a combination of total bandwidth, underlying software, processors, storage mechanisms, payment gateways etc.
