IntelliWheels AGS System: Smart Wheelchair With Switching Gears

If shifting gears is meant for cyclists and motorists, why should we ignore the wheelchair users? Reports show that 70% of the wheelchair users develop pain shoulders because of the mandatory arm movements required to propel the wheelchair. We haven't seen innovations for wheelchair for long time now. Scott Daigle, an engineering student from University of Illinois thought of installing an intelligent gear system for the wheelchair. His innovation is being realized by IntelliWheels - the company he founded. Scott attended both undergraduate and graduate courses at the University and figured out a way to make it easier for the wheelchair users to travel miles across the campus.

Scott's IntelliWheels system chooses the right gear depending upon the terrain condition. The best part of the system is that it's a two wheel system which can directly attach to any manual wheelchair. The system was developed by taking inputs from the wheelchair users. The design reduces the load on the arms and makes it easier to operate the wheelchair. The wheels weigh about 2.2 kg each. The sensors mounted at the bottom of the wheelchair analyse the path conditions and decide which gear is the most appropriate.
