Intelligent Transportation Systems
Project Abstract / Summary : INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS
Intelligent Transportation System is the application of advanced sensor, computer, electronics, and communication technologies and management strategiesâin an integrated mannerâto improve the safety and efficiency of the surface transportation system.
Why promote ITS?
· To Co-ordinate different transport modes and safe pedestrian crossings
· To solve Social Problems caused by Road
· To activate the Economy and Countryâs growth along with Infrastructure
· To reach an Advanced Information and Tele-communication Society
Benefits of ITS
· Reduce Traffic Congestion
· Reduce Fuel Consumption
· To Reduce Road Accidents
· Safety
· Reliability
· Quality of means of transport
Intelligent Transportation Technologies
⢠Electronic toll collection
It enables automatic toll collection by scanning the number plates of the vehicles when it passes through the gate. This reduces congestion and vehicles travel at maintaining the same speed without actually stopping at toll plazas.
⢠Emergency vehicle notification systems
If any accidents happens, vehicles are notified in advanced so that they follow some other route to reach their destination. This avoids delays and traffic jam.
⢠Automatic road enforcement
It helps in detecting the vehicles which disobey the traffic rules such as not following signals and traveling at more than speed limit.
⢠Hot lanes
A track is reserved for vehicles which travel with speed for more than 100 kmph. If any vehicle moves out of this track, a shock wave is generated and the vehicles are forced to move into the hot lane.
· Automated Pedestrian Detection
It detects if any pedestrian is waiting at a crosswalk and the information is send to the signal. This signal guides the pedestrian to cross the road.
· Turn Warning System
It gives audible message to the pedestrians if a vehicle id Turing through the intersection point.
I.T.S Requirements in India
· Numberofvehicles â raised and more number of accidents encountered due to more growth in population without growth in traffic control infrastructure.
⢠Worldâshighestannualroadfatalities - 90,000 persons are killed on Indian roads every year.
⢠I.T.S India project â
à To improve road safety, economy and the efficiency of transportation systems.
à Close cooperation between European and Indian stakeholders, defining key issues for ITS deployment in particular, Intelligent Integrated Safety Systems.
Causes of Road Accidents
à Driverâs fault -83.6%
⢠Pedestrianâs fault/fault of driver -4.8%
⢠Mechanical defect in vehicles -2.9%
⢠Bad roads -1.2%
à Bad weather -0.8%
⢠Other factors-6.7%
E.g. cattle, fallen trees, road blockages, non-functioning of signals andabsence of rear reflectors/road signs
Conclusion
⢠I.T.S needs to be installed to reduce the accidents and loss of life.
⢠I.T.S would also lead to less environmental damage and reduce pollution related issues.
⢠The making of new vehicles should be well equipped with necessary technologies. This includes stronger levels of enforcement and traffic regulations.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : We all know its the transportation system of a country which decides the development of any country. Country's Infrastructure says a lot about its people and the management. All the developed countries have good transportation which has helped them to achieve such a place. It not only reduces accidents, it booms economy in long run, save fuel, and protects environment as well. In India, traffic field is under developed. We are aware of intelligent transportation systems and its use but we are unable to install it due to lack of proper management and planning. If not now, it would be done in future as it is impossible for us to develop fully without utilizing these. so, it has a lot of future scope and i believe only deep research, knowledge and good management can build I.T.S in India.
Project Highlights : It hardly matters to us we win or not because through this competition we are not only enhancing our knowledge in our interest field but also implementing our ideas for a betterment for people and its country. We win the contest or not, we would keep working in this field and achieve our goals. Winning this competition would act like an additional motivation to us and we will give our best for this contest.
