Intel 'Rose Point' SoC To Integrate Wi-Fi Modem On A Single Die

2011 was the year of fusion chips with the biggest achievement being integration of GPU and CPU on the same chip. This resulted in a #-Link-Snipped-#because of the facility of the same chip hosting two critical components. Add to that, energy savings were also an advantage with the new SoC (System-on-Chip) designs. A few of the mobile device makers  such as Qualcomm, Inc. went ahead and also added a baseband processor to the chip which is reponsible for 3G/4G/LTE communication standards.

On this note, Intel has been a little behind with providing communication standard embedded onto the chip but soon enough Intel is set to change that and already has the 'Rose Point' SoC in motion. The 'Rose Point' SoC is Intel's entry into integration of communication standard onto chip and it's doing so by adding a Wi-Fi modem on an atom die. Intel will introduce this 32 nm SoC at #-Link-Snipped-# (ISSCC 2012).

Rose Point's success was no easy task for Intel. Traditional modem houses a number of analog circuit components, such as synthesizers and amplifiers which are responsible in driving wireless modems on a large range of device voltages but this meant a heavy redesign on the part of chipmakers because the previous silicon modems used only two voltages. Another issue was the interference caused by Wi-Fi communications (2.4 GHz) speed which is apparently close to Atom's base CPU's base clock speed. But eventually, Intel found a way around the harmful EMF levels by using new noise-cancelling technologies and miniature shielding methods.

Intel is hopeful about 'Rose Point' SoCs as it would bring the benefits of Moore’s law to RF and radio circuits but considering Intel is already lagging in the race it has to up its game and that as soon as it can. Though sources from Wired have a different story to tell. A Wired article cites Intel as saying that its Wi-Fi enabled SoCs won't land until "the middle of the decade". In that case, Intel would be at a far bigger disadvantage than it already is.
