As per the announcement made by the company at CeBIT tech show, the E5 series is set to come in two varieties; importantly the first one is the E5-2600 series mainly for mainstay in the server market with two processor sockets. The other one E5-1600 series is essentially designed for single-socket workstations. But both of them are power efficient by their design.

For restless cloud computing and other internet business, the demand for an efficient server is strictly rising. Also, Intel’s Xeon chips are mainly designed to serve such purpose thereby becoming the main element of the company’s business. Further, the newly designed chips come with diverse configurations especially with 10 MB to 20 MB on-chip cache memory, 6 to 8 cores and power consumption ranging between 60 watts to 135 watts. Clocked at a speed of 1.8 GHz to 3.6 GHz, these processor chips are built using 32 nanometer manufacturing process.

Lisa Graff, General Manager of Data Center Platform Engineering said: the E5 series processors include a peculiar technology that shuts down inactive parts of the processor there by leaving enough scope to save energy. The more features a CPU carries, the more power it consumes. It’s like dimming all lights in a room when the room is unused, she added.

In a nutshell, the E5’s energy efficiency will rise up to 50 percent which is definitely an upgradation to previous Xeon models. At the end, the company announced the price of these processors to range in between $198 to $2,050 for a batch of 1000 units.
