Innovative Energy Storage Solutions From Nottingham University

Researchers at Nottingham University are developing innovative solutions to store energy generated by renewable sources. E.ON, UK's leading power & gas companies have provided €1.4m for the project that involves creation of super batteries & undersea storage bags that can collect energy in the form of compress air.

Dr George Chen and Dr Christian Klumpner, from the university’s engineering department are leading the project that involves combining expertise in electrochemical engineering and power electronics to design an electrical energy storage solution called a supercapattery, which combines the benefits of a supercapacitor and a battery.

#-Link-Snipped-#Dr. Klumpner has mentioned that the researchers are attempting at whooping 80% efficiency. At the moment, the tests have been conducted at watt & kilowatt levels but the search is already on to find the industrial partner who can build the supercapattery at megawatt level. A system of this size could provide the crucial stability needed by the national grid in the event of a national power surge. Chen said: ‘A 10MW to 100MW system is something good for a population of 10,000 to 100,000 people.’ - reported #-Link-Snipped-#.

I believe lot of industrial support & funding to such projects will lead to creation of energy efficient batteries that will change our tomorrow.
