Infosys "3.0" To Develop Software Products. Finally.
Infosys top team is thinking of setting up a new IT company to focus on product development. After Mr. Narayana Murthy says final #-Link-Snipped-# to Infosys in August, the new team will spring up into action. The new Chairman of the company, Mr. K.V. Kamath & CEO S D Shibulal will either acquire a company in the domains the Infy is looking to innovate or setup a new startup company under Infosys to focus on product development. Infosys remained focused on IT services since its existence - which is relatively a less riskier business than products development.

This is not the first time Infosys is looking at products development. The company offers an impressive list of products (see below) which indicates that the company has prior experience of products development & selling them to clients. With a foray into full-fledged products company, Infosys will try its hand at building a higher value business. The risks in building an IT products based company are higher as even good products may fail after investing lot of money. But if they work, the returns could be phenomenal. Global IT product giants like Microsoft, Apple, SAP, Oracle have been the role models in this domain.
Infosys will develop products in the domains it has some expertise already. These include cloud computing, mobility and sustainability. Company officials say that the new company will offer a start-up company like environment. Typically, product driven companies require out of the box thinking which is only provided by a unique culture, DNA and freedom to engineers. In IT services companies, engineers are forced to follow processes and bureaucratic procedures that chain the innovation.
Product development company will become a part of new INFY (call it "Infosys 3.0") which aims to transform from a end-to-end technology solutions company to a business solutions firm. Given the sorry state of Indian IT firms in coming up with innovative IT products, it would be interesting to follow Infosys on this front. We appreciate this move by Infosys bosses. It's not however certain whether INFY's products will be made for end consumers or just the businesses. Updates on this, as we hear them.
