The department of telecommunications (DoT), India has issued a notice to the ISPs to block a list of 32 websites that include github.com, pastebin, vimeo and archive.org. The order was issued on December 17th and several ISPs in India have began blocking these websites. If you are an Internet user from India who's unable to access the websites mentioned in the list below, you know who to blame. Mr. Pranesh Prakash, Policy Director at Center For Internet and Society at Bangalore posted a tweet informing about the list of blocked websites.

GitHub-Banned-India

According to various sources, the websites have been asked to be blocked because of the security reasons. Mr. Arvind Gupta of BJP announced via twitter that the list of websites to be blocked was prepared based on the advice by the ATS (anti-terrorism squad) that suspects that the anti-nationals have been using these websites to carry out ISIS agenda.

Of all the 32 websites to be blocked, GitHub is likely to disturb the technical community in India. The website is quite popular among the software developer community to share their code with each other. Lot of open source projects operated from India rely on GitHub for sharing of code and are likely to be affected by this move.

ListofURLsBlocked

It however appears that BSNL and some other ISPs in India are allowing access to some of these websites. We hope that the Government addresses the issues raised by the users at earliest. Do let us know your thoughts via comments below.

Not really! Github is working for me and pastebin was blocked. I'm more concerned about the Github thing because I am in the process of making myself familiar with it. I just hope they continue to keep it accessible. Not all ISPs have blocked the entire list.

I doubt that'll work. If it's the ISP that's blocked - you won't be able to do much about it. I've faced similar issues long time ago. But don't worry, they won't ban Github for a long time. I expect it to be unblocked in the next one or two days.

So, you think I am lying ?
    Well, I got proof too.

    1) With no other DNS. (ISP BSNL DNS)
    DNSshit3aavvss
And here's what it shows in browser :
    DNSshit1aa

    2) With Google DNS.

    DNSshit
    And browser :
    DNSshit2aavv

I usually never say anything without proof 😀

Ridiculous! Does that mean, in near future, every Indian dweller should own a VPS somewhere else in the world and setup tunnels for unrestricted Internet access?

We seriously need to review laws for Internet rights!

Guys, before you go all against the DoT, note that the decisions to ban entire website are based only when there's enough evidence. I understand that everyone's pissed of because of inclusion of GitHub; which is of course incorrect.

Instead of blocking the website, I think they should tie-up with GitHub to find out anything that's suspicious; which may mean every code that you put on GitHub will be scanned by algorithms. Doesn't look like a possibility; but 'maybe'?

Don't you know about the reality?
Government has smoke some weed and they come to know that anti-nationals(Read Anti-India) are planning to post open-source weapon on Github.
You idiots first block google if you thinks github is anti-national then google is first.

It seems they just asked their well educated employees to Google for websites where people can host free code or free websites, then git hub might come somewhere in google search which they informed to their well educated post graduate seniors who don't know anything other than giving non sense orders

From websites like github, codepad, pastebin it is very clear this is procedure they followed

You can try it by searching "host free website" on google, all the names that are on top, are blocked, like weebly, freehosting, 000webhost

I'm just sick & tired of this shit! They've seriously no idea what they are doing.
First their so-called education system literally don't teach any IT stuff! People or I would say so-called Engineers (CS/IT) are even afraid to code a simple fibonacci or some recursive program (most of them are really afraid of it! Yeah they do and we've to accept it)
Next, the people who could really learn by sharing their code gets a good message "GitHub Blocked, Pastebin blocked". Now what the heck is this?

Most of the IT work is done by so-called Indian IT engineers and this a tight slap on their faces making sure that they should fu**in' never progress in their life!

    Update:

While the Indian government is scrutinizing many of the web applications, 28 to be precise, it has unblocked GitHub, Vimeo, Weebly and Dailymotion.
