identification of deviation of critical submarine parameters and its control by a submarine robot

Project Abstract / Summary : The safe navigation of submarine is a challenging issue for navy. Various parameters necessary to be monitored are measured and the values are continuously transmitted to control room. When the submarine comes up to the surface of the water periodically to charge the batteries, the important values such as temperature, pressure, vibration, level of fuel and charge level of batteries are sent to the central control system. In case of deviation, a robot is controlled to do the corrections such as fire extinguishing and acid level correction in batteries.
Preventive measures can be taken by monitoring some of the important parameters of the submarine. The parameters to be monitored are: temperature, pressure, vibration of the submarine, tribology, battery charge level and spark/fire. The devices used to measure the required parameters are thermistor, pressure sensor, accelerometer, Micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS), Smoke sensor, flame detector. Threshold value for each parameter is predefined. Values from each sensor are transmitted to the control room where the navy officers monitor these parameters and initiate the necessary actions if any abnormal value is being detected.

Here the controlling action is performed by a robot. This robot is allowed to move through different compartments of submarine. In each compartment a receiver is fixed and a single transmitter is fixed inside the robot. So whenever the robot enters in a particular compartment its presence is detected and a signal is transmitted to the control room to identify the location of robot. For this purpose, navigation software is developed in computer which maps the entire submarine. A fire extinguisher is attached to the robot which can be used in case of an unexpected fire accident. A video camera is fitted to the robot for continuously monitoring the different parts of the submarine that might be inaccessible by the crew at times. An officer can also command the robot to go to a particular compartment if necessary. By carefully monitoring the diesel engine and battery most of the fire related accidents can be avoided. So a proximity sensor which is used to estimate the level of fuel and a smoke sensor is fitted in the diesel engine generator. Lead acid battery is the heart of submarine which is used for the propulsion and to drive all electronic equipments inside the submarine. The acid drain is detected using nucleonic gauge and the required amount of acid is added by the robot. Dc shunt is used to monitor the charge level of battery. When temperature and pressure inside the submarine deviates, a message is sent to the control room and the required actions are taken.many hazardous accidents can be averted by this system.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : In many cases,Indian submarines have been found to fail due in incompetent monitoring of the critical parameters.This leads to many a casualty and an irreparable loss both in terms of human life as well as equipment that are expensive.This urged us to find a solution to overcome this.
