Iconic San Francisco Bay Bridge To Be Lit Up By 25,000 LEDs This March

When someone mentions San Francisco, the first image that comes to mind is the San Francisco Bay Bridge. This bridge is now all set to become world's largest light sculpture from March 2013 when its west span will be lit by 25,000 white LEDs which have been programmed to display complex patterns. The project ‘The Bay Lights’ is the brain-child of artist Leo Villareal. This six month installation began in September 2012 with specially trained riggers working from evening to early morning attaching LED lights wires to cables on the bridge. Villareal has created his own software to get a three layer control of the grid.

The artist will use patterns of weather, water, traffic of cars and ships and also wildlife to create the lights patterns that will be displayed on the bridge. The lights are being claimed to be highly efficient as they will be consuming only $11,000 (591,805 INR) worth of electricity annually. The Bay Lights project has been estimated to cost 2 million dollars. The lights are all set to be switched on from March 5 and will be lit everyday from dusk to midnight. For now, have a look at the video below for artist rendering of those lights.
