IBM To Invest $100 Million On Research In “Big Data Analysis”, Launches Services Based On Hadoop

International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) on Friday announced its decision to invest $100 million in research for analytics and big data projects. The computer giant also launched Hadoop based services which is used to analyze unstructured data bringing it into lines with Google and Yahoo, the strong Hadoop proponents.

With the current investments, IBM expects to reach target revenue of $16 Billion till the year 2015. Hadoop is an open source technology and the software by IBM is based on it along with 50 Big Blue patents.

According to company, IBM has many customers collecting huge amount of data through #-Link-Snipped-#software and hardware based sensors however they lack analyzing tools. The software by IBM “InfoSphere BigInsights and Streams Software”  will have developer and integration tools along with security tools and data governance too. The unstructured data like Tweets, videos and stock market data can now be easily analyzed by InfoSphere BigInsights and Streams Software. IBM also said that it is going to provide 20 services related to the new software to analyze massive data. The analytical capabilities of the software will be amazing. It is capable to analyze data in terms of Petabytes in terms of milliseconds.

The company projects a 6.5 times increase in data including 80% unprocessed data during the next five years. The services provided include automating critical events analytics using security analytics. For faster implementation time, the optimization tools for storage and server tools are also provided. IBM has also stressed on cost analysis of Data center lifecycle. This will boost sustainability efforts also cutting expenses. It also equips the software to help the user with Cloud workload analysis which prioritizes cloud deployments.

Speaking regarding the research aspect of the decision, IBM vice president of emerging technologies, Mr. Rod Smith felt that it is very good time to take up some research work to help its customers get some actionable insights in the Big Data.

Recently a survey was conducted in IBM amongst 3000 chief information officers (CIOs). In this, around 83% of  CIOs were of the opinion favoring application of Analytics to IT services. The decision comes in response to this recently conducted survey. Company has termed this decision as The most important element of their strategic growth plans over the next three to five years.
