IBM India Data Center Embraces Solar Power. Fights Load Shedding In Bangalore.

With the ever growing computing needs of human beings, #-Link-Snipped-# are more important than ever before. In order to cope up with the power needs of their data center in Bangalore, IBM India Software Lab has embraced the solar power. Kota Murali, one of the chief scientists at IBM India says that his facility has to face 3-6 hours of load shedding forcing them to rely on diesel generators for power supply. The fix? Well, the engineers got together to develop a 50 MW DC power supply for the data center that can provide enough energy 5 hours a day. The company has installed 6000 sqft of solar panels on the roof already. The servers mostly need DC and solar electricity saves the losses during AC-DC conversion, thus saving about 13% of electricity.

Rod Atkins, SVP of Systems & Technology Group at IBM says that his engineers are working on integrating water-cooling mechanisms with DC-IT systems along with the solar power. Water is generating more interest as it's proving to be a better coolant than air. Great going, IBM!
