Human Verification Techniques - ideas & discussions

CEans,

Spammers are a big headaches for websites, especially web based forums. We implement techniques like CAPTCHA & reCAPTCHA to prevent spammers from setting up scripts to do fake registrations and posts.

I'm wondering if we can think of a better human verification technique. I hope I'm clear about what are we going to discuss in this thread.

    Hi,

I have 3 things in mind

    1. Send confirmation mail to given email id for activation.
    2. Prepare a database of 1000 odd simple question.
The registration page should pop up with random 4 to 5 questions.
Let the user answer for them. Let the answers be simple objective type question. Like
    3 + 2 = ?
    1 * 9 = ?
    Capital of India?

If they are correct only then they can be successful registered.
(correctness to be checked at server end!)
And no Crazy engineers will dislike it? what do you say?

    3. Registration only through invitation! and let there be a simple form for
    Invite Me Please: --------- Submit;
This could be moderated and we can send the random URL. which we need to expire after one use.

    Thansk & Regards
    Sriram

    1) I guess first thing is taken care of at CE. But I think spammers will be able to crack it with fake email ids.
2)Second idea is really good ! But users need to know mathematics 😀
    3) Third thing will put lot of work pressure on moderators ! Users may not be able to sign up immidiately causing them go away !

[PS: I'm not criticizing. Just thought of saying my views 😀 ]

    Hey Diff..,

but i told simple questions right may be even like,
    - what comes after letter A! will also do.

    - show picture of circle and ask, what is it?
    option: triangle, line, circle!

    - show Aishwarya rai's photo and ask, who is she?
    Option: Male, Female

hmm regarding simple maths, we could have a read version of Maths intro!

    Thanks & Regards
    Sriram

Hmm, Leh me try a techie one, How about a multichoice but very simple question, Reason why I am quoting this is, I dont think a Crawling Bot can trigger a radio buttons set, It cud not fire an event by itself.

Let me know if I need to upgrade my knowledge base on this..

One way could be, posting a picture of a famous personality or monument and asking members to identify it.

The_Big_KOne way could be, posting a picture of a famous personality or monument and asking members to identify it.

What if the user fails to identify it ? He must have an option of getting next personality ! That could resolve this problem !

One more suggestion ! A video of letters or numbers (insted of image in CAPTCHA) would be difficuilt to crack for spammers !

Of course you can give multiple options. Oh come on, we are engineers!

the only problem with "human verification" is that, it can be hacked by a human. eg. some site has captcha at his end and I'm a hacker. Now definitely I can't write a program in a jiffy !
So what if i take the ask for its decode in a porn site and pay 3 cents for it 😉

so a captcha with a less timeout might do the trick 😀

or, i can change CAPTCHA over the interval of every 10 seconds !

xeroor, i can change CAPTCHA over the interval of every 10 seconds !

😐 Boy! We are not evil.

Big part of the world is yet to be benefited from The Big K's rapid typing techniques.

Jokes apart, reCAPTCHA does a fantastic job. I really like the idea of having a set of 50 simple questions and randomly picking one at the time of filling the registration form. That should be a bit difficult to crack, say what?

[Btw, XERO, you are like Halley's Comet, huh? But as always, good to see you back 😉 ]

sriramchandrk- show Aishwarya rai's photo and ask, who is she?
    Option: Male, Female

I like this male female question ... needn't to know who's the person actually

Don't take it otherwise but, questionnaire technique sounds cliche`. It can be irritating if myself being an end user couldn't identify personalities 😛
moreover hurting user's general awareness quotients lolz

We aren't talking about tough questions. Let's say, we ask users to identify simple objects : Apple, Banana, etc.
