Huawei Tests 10 Gbps Wi-Fi, Next Generation Wi-Fi Standard
Huawei had started its research for improvement in Wi-Fi speeds right from 2010 which has culminated into a prototype resulting in record-breaking transmission rate of 10.53 Gbps on 5 MHz frequency bands. To achieve this, their research focussed on developing new architectures that would focus on breaking the logjam of classical WiFi wideband radio and baseband processing to increase user data rates. The spectrum efficiency was increased tenfold by using innovative technologies such as MIMO-OFDA, intelligence spectrum allocation, interference coordination and hybrid access which would provide dense networking for ultra-hot zones such as enterprise offices, airports, stadiums, shopping malls and coffee shops.
The company has not given extensive details about the commercialization of the protocol, termed 802.11ax WLAN standard, but has said that it will be 4 more years till the agreement on the new global standards is reached and the required chipsets are available. At the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 WLAN standard plenary meeting held from May 12-15, 2014 in Hawaii, Dr. Osama Aboul Magd from Huawei was elected as the 802.11ax WLAN standard task group chair to focus on the development of the next generation 10 Gbps WiFi standard planned for commercial launch in 2018.
