HP's Operating system WebOS for smartphones and tablets has been in much trouble recently. The portable device platform was bought by HP from WebOS maker Palm in April 2010. Unfortunately, the WebOS devices haven't managed to make good sales since, putting HP in a tight spot. Till recently, there were rumors that HP is planning an exit strategy for its WebOS platform, despite it being a technically efficient platform, with cloud-connection and scalability features. Now, HP has announced that it is making its WebOS platform available to the Open Source community to accelerate next-generation web-based platform.

With this contribution to Open source community, HP aims to bring about a significant change in the applications and web services for next generation devices. Technically, as a web-based platform, WebOS has the feature of supporting applications constructed using standard web technologies and offer multiplatform portability. HP will continue to be an active part of the development process and provide the necessary inputs to WebOS. The company also states that it will be providing the application framework, ENYO, to the Open Source community in near future.
If this marks the second coming of the web-centric platform or not, is now dependent on how well the Open Source community makes use of this opportunity handed to them. The success of Open Source platform might lead to a WebOS comeback on tablets in 2013.
