How does anti-virus scan files so quickly?

I wish to know how does an anti-virus software scan so many files quickly for viruses? I wish to know how the antivirus software works.

    The anti virus softwares have predefined algorithms of basic and more common VIRUSes and when scanning a file it just checks whether the algorithms are present in the file if any one point fails the proximity of the file to serve as a virus diminishes

    The lesser the proximity the quicker the file get scanned
