Honda ASIMO Humanoid With World's First Autonomous Behavior Control Technology

Honda's #-Link-Snipped-# is well known. A new & improved version of  the ASIMO humanoid robot is now unveiled by Honda. It comes what they call after Honda's internal research as the world’s first autonomous behavior control technology supported humanoid. The new advancements in ASIMO like ability to move without operator control, makes it more suitable/practical for use in public places and for daily use.

Technical specifications of the all new ASIMO are:

1. Height: 130 centimeters
2. Weight: 48 kilograms, decreased 6 kg from previous model
3. Degrees of freedom: 57 DOF total, increase of 23 DOF from previous model
4. Running speed: 9 km/h (5.6 miles per hour), compared to 6 km/h for previous model

What makes ASIMO an autonomous machine? It is it's ability to decide it's own behavior in response to the surroundings. So, the  new ASIMO can has posture maintaining quality, ability to recognize external information using multiple sensors that are similar to human visual, auditory, and tactile senses and determine it's behavior as a response to this information. ASIMO can also predict the location of person & where he/she will walk on the basis of pre-set space sensors & avoid collision with him/her.

Check out the video below, where new ASIMO's physical capabilities are demonstrated. Look out for the increased leg strength & new leg movements like hopping on one leg.

Another cool addition is the availability of  colors in ASIMO - Blue, Green and Yellow.

Honda has given a collective name as 'Honda Robotics' to represent all of its robotics technologies and product applications. Japan is sure going to churn out something awesome in coming days. What remains to be seen is how research in robotics takes us beyond entertainment and does things far more super-human in the areas of emergency services and surgery.
