It is curious that manufacturers aim to increase efficiency of electrical goods so that less energy is wasted. This laudable aim increases availability of power. Consumers become profligate and tend to waste power.
This happens in indirect ways also. When cooked food is thrown, the energy used for cooking that much food is also wasted. When developing countries export rice, about 2000 litres of virtual water/kg (used for irrigation) is exported as well.
Here is an interesting take on energy waste:

Awareness about energy costs and depleting resources is the only solution for conservation of energy in any form.Global alerts are needed on mass scale to educate consumers. This problem may not be faced by developed nations presently. The developing economies have to rethink and combine their strategies in conserving as well as technology up-gradation.As the well-known idiom goes `energy saved is energy generated', Generating utilities should introduce incentives for reducing electricity consumption percentage-wise by reducing energy charges for the energy consumed. Because present trend is to charge more for more consumption (in slabs of 50 units, 51 to 100 units, 101 to 300 units etc.).If they can charge more(penal charges) for excess consumption then why not less (incentive)for less consumption?
Are you sure? This action cannot be undone.
