A Bengaluru based startup company Helpchat has released a new feature to its Android and iOS apps that lets users receive alerts about pollution levels in an area in their city. The app's feature comes at the right time, what with the citizens' attention focused on the rising levels of pollution in the country, thanks to the recent hoopla about the proposed solution of the even-odd rule in India's capital city of Delhi bring pollution under check.

HelpChat is primarily a smart personal assistant that helps you get things done be it laundry or grocery - the list includes everything from recharging your phone to ordering food to planning holidays.

With the recent feature called 'Air Quality Index', the app brings you data fetched from Central Pollution Control Board and a few other sources and creates a bar chart indicating the severity of the pollution levels in the air. The app also takes into consideration percentage of several poisonous gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide as well as the lead content.

The Helpchat team also has to fetch data from certain websites that forecast pollution levels. Their core algorithm works on all this data collected and calculates the metrics. By highlighting this data, the app essentially tells the user to avoid certain locations.

The Air Quality Index is measured in terms of six categories ranging from Good to Severe by showing numbers from 0 to 500 (zero being the safest). As of now, the app only shows reports about the locations where the Control Board is currently operating.
To use the feature, users have to select the location on top of the screen. The app will give you the results and also show the pollution level in areas near to the location you selected. So, for instance you choose BTM Layout in Bangalore, it will also show the status of SaneguruvanaHalli, Peenya and Kadubeesanahalli.

Pollution has been a rising global concern. Beijing is on the top of the list of the most polluted cities in the world, followed by Delhi and Bengaluru. The Chinese recently were in news as they China buys cans of fresh air from Canada from a Canadian startup. It only goes to say abot the worsening state of this alarming situation.
