Grid IQ Insight - Industrial Internet Helps Predict & Prevent Grid Outages

General Electric (GE) has launched industrial internet that helps predict and prevent electrical grid outages. The system connects with all the existing system components including grid power equipment, sensors and also collect data from social networking websites like Facebook & Twitter to collect gigabytes of data in real time and analyses it. It then generates a list of actionable items which can be used to predict and prevent grid power outages.

I liked the idea and wonder if this was thought of before. I've been away from my roots (electrical engineering) for long and wonder if such techniques have been thought of in the recent years. I can see that such systems can be incredibly useful in saving a ton of money and efforts in fixing grid outages. What's your take?
