The Government of India has announced an important policy update today. All the e-Governance systems to be built by the Indian Government will be based on the open source software available on the Internet so that the projects being executed under the Digital India can bank on the efficiency, transparency and reliability of software in the open source domain. The adoption of open source software will also help bringing down the overall cost of development of the systems.

According to report published in #-Link-Snipped-#, the Government will adopt open source technology in all the e-Governance systems over the closed source software. The detailed policy [#-Link-Snipped-#) was put up on the official website of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology. The policy also makes the compliance mandatory so that the overall cost of ownership of the systems remains economical. In cases where the use of Open Sourced Software (OSS) is not feasible, the supplier will have to provide appropriate justification in their response.

There are exceptions as well. In cases where the OSS solution does not meet the functional requirements or the skill-set required to develop / operate the technology is not available; the government will make exception to the policy. We, at CrazyEngineers, congratulate the government of India for this initiative and are sure that the open source community is pleased with this new policy of the government. Do let us know your views and opinions on the policy.
