Google takes security seriously and two-step authentication was just another step in the right direction. Google's security engineers are already busy working on the next generation of user security - and the answer may lie in what we can call 'physical passwords'. The company is experimenting with secure log-in mechanisms using YubiKey cryptographic USB card; which you can plug into your computer, and automatically sign in to your account - without needing extra authentication.
The focus is on enhancing the security while making the whole process simpler. With the physical passwords, you'll just have to open your favorite website, say 'CrazyEngineers' and then insert your YubiKey in the USB port.  And then  just log-in with a simple click. The plan is also to see the feasibility of using a smart-chip embedded finger ring so that you just have to tap on your computer to authenticate yourself, wirelessly.
This process may open newer opportunities in the security domain. The future may not be 100% password-free; but the new methods will ensure that you don't have to stress your brain to remember the complicated password that you created in order to comply with the security standards.
