Google's Self-Driving Car Travels 300,000 Miles Without Any Accident
Google has been working on it's self driving car technology, where the user is required to enter an address in Google maps, after which the system gathers information from Google Street View and combines it with artificial intelligence software. The software includes information from video cameras in car, a LIDAR sensor on top of vehicle, radar sensors in front and a position sensor attached to one of the rear wheels that helps locate the car's position on map. These sensors aid the car in maintaining distance with surrounding vehicles/objects. Google has announced today that this self-driving car was successful in traveling 300,000 miles without any accident.

Though this is a great achievement, but the project still has a long way to go. It cannot respond to dynamic situations and thus cannot deal with snow covered roads or under-construction ones. The car provides an override facility as well, which allows the driver to take control by stepping on brake or turning the wheel. While under test, the car is driven by two people - a well trained driver accompanied by a Google engineer in passenger's seat. Though, Google plans to soon let the engineers drive it alone.
