Google Transit - a Google service that relies on Google Maps will now show the up to date timings of Indian Railways. The uninitiated may note that Transit – Google Maps Maps is a tool that lets you get information about public transportation methods available. It includes all the information like stops, multiple routes, correct schedule and also fare details that help easy planning of your trip. We believe the inclusion of Indian Rail timings in Google Transit was long due.

According to ET, the current update of the app includes public transport information for eight Indian cities. Google Transit uses the maps feature offered by Google to get latest information and make it available to the users through Android and iOS apps. Google will include information about 12,000 trains and detailed bus/metro routes from New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Pune as well.

Suren Ruhela, a Google executive informed that the Google Transit is a part of Google's plan to make the maps more useful, accurate as well as comprehensive. He hoped that with addition of Indian Railway data to Google Maps will make it easier for millions of people to plan and schedule their next trip. At present, Google Maps' transit feature includes public transportation information of about a million stops globally. Google continues to collaborate with public transport providers all over the world to make Google Transit feature rich and useful to all the users.

With Hyderabad reportedly being chosen as first city for Google Street View in India, I hope Google keeps on developing it's Map related services. It is time we have access to free tools provided by Google to plan our transits in real time.
