Google's launched the Messenger App, a standalone messenger that's waiting for you to download it from Google Play Store. While we try to figure out the point of launching yet another messaging app while Google's own Hangouts app continues to rock millions of phones around the world; we'll give you a quick overview of what this new app offers. The launch of the Messenger App isn't surprising because rumours were already circulating that Google was working on its own WhatsApp Rival From Google May Arrive Soon - Would It Be Better?. With only SMS/MMS support so far, we don't see this as a WhatsApp killer yet. But Google does seem to have a plan!

The new messenger app comes pre-installed with the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop, but is now available for all your devices powered by Android 4.1 or higher. The app runs happily along with the hangouts and is capable of tapping into your existing SMS and MMS. The app does offer Google cool new 'material design' look and also has the ability to let you send/receive audio messages. The official description of the app also points at allowing the users to block SMS senders, emoji support, colorful message threads (discussions) along with message archiving; if you need it.

As of writing this article, the App's received a rating of 4.4 stars from over 5,000 people on Google Play. Head over to the download link (below the article) and give it a try. Make sure that your phone or tablet is running Android 4.1+ (Jelly Bean).

The App currently runs only on Android platform and we are not sure if Google plans to make this app available on other platforms anytime in future. Do let us know your thoughts on the new app and what might Google be thinking with their latest messaging app.

It is sms/mms app so it will use Data connection or sms balance? MMS uses your main balance right!

In future, maybe! And if you see it makes sense. WhatsApp has been bagged by Facebook and now they enjoy the dominance. Google's got nothing that would keep them relevant in the instance messaging space. They now want to capture your SMS and MMS so that they've at least some presence.

SMS will be consumed from your regular recharge; but MMS will need data connection on.

MMS uses the data connection but it float through mobile companies server and they charge pretty much for it. let say INR. 2-5 per MMS.
While Whatsapp/Hangout uses only data connection without MMS charges.
It's just updated SMS app from Android 5.0.

BTW, Who uses MMS these days!!👎

Not every day. They've been very selective about what features to add to the messenger.

yah, You are right. I think they are really confused, becoz few month ago they planned for the hyper growth of FB messenger , neglecting Whats app. And now they are upgrading the same.
The same happened for instagram app. The Mark Zukerburge is going crazy while developing n marketing the app.
