In a recent media event held by Google's executives in San Francisco, the company unveiled its new mapping features for Google Maps. The preview boasted of ground-breaking features such as 3D enhancements to Google Earth, foundation of a portable device for taking street-view panoramic photos and offline access to Google Maps for Android phones. Google Imagery, which uses an automated process to deliver detailed 3D models, does so using a fleet of planes which provide 45-degree aerial photos of places. The resulting product is a neat three-dimensional image of the landscape along with top and side-view of building with an option to zoom.

Along with 3D Imagery, Google has also made an effort to broaden its scope by taking up the Street view Trekker project. The Street View Trekker reaches places which are usually inaccessible by vehicles, bestowing on us the beautiful wilderness to explore. Another aspect that Google has covered is accuracy. What is today, may not be tomorrow, and a constantly updated map is a must to make the mapping service of better use. Google takes care of that by operating thousands of edits a day based on user feedback from The Report a Problem tool on Google Maps - YouTube and #-Link-Snipped-#.

While perfection is a long chase, with the availability of the mapping service offline and the progress that has been achieved in rendering an interactive service to the user, Google Maps has come a long way since its launch in 2005 and positively impressed us all.
