Google Drive (GDrive) May Launch In April - GigaOm Suspects!

Founder of GigaOm, Mr. #-Link-Snipped-# that the hide & seek with Google's much awaited online storage service called #-Link-Snipped-# aka GDrive may finally end in April this year. Om says that he's got the information from his 'well placed' sources but he still doubts it because of Google's history with the Google Drive system. We've been hearing about Google's mysterious online file storage system since 2006 when the first rumors emerged via the Wall Street Journal. There's no clear information about the launch date, but it could be released in the first week of April 2012. Google, as always, has not declared anything yet and keeping mum as they don't comment on the rumors.

According to Om's sources, Google will offer 1GB of online storage free of cost, but is likely to charge for more storage space. Now compare that with market leader Dropbox's 2GB free! It's also expected that Google Drive will function the same way as Drobox with a local client and a web interface. The web interface will likely resemble the screenshots that have been leaked several times earlier (see below). Given Google's initiative of unifying the look across all of its services, we expect Gdrive to resemble the look of the Google Docs service. What excites us more is that Google Drive will be available for Google Apps as well; and it will be domain specific. We at CrazyEngineers use Google Apps and know how cool it'd be if we have a Gdrive tied with our domain!

The top questions in our mind at the moment are - 1. What took Google so long to offer a cloud storage service? 2. Is Google looking to rival the Dropbox; and if yes, will it be very hard for Google to do that? We're always interested in knowing what our readers think.
