Google.Com/Wallet/ Rolled Out - Are Consumers Ready For It?

Google Wallet is an Android app, as you might already know, that makes your phone your wallet. Google Wallet app creates virtual replicas of the plastic cards in your existing wallet. It let's you tap on your smartphone screen to pay and redeem offers using NFC (Near Field Communication). And yeah, it's very different from Google Checkout, which is a service that enables merchants to accept and process online payments.

Google has forayed into mobile payments with the release of this app to all Sprint Nexus S 4G phones, thereby promoting the so-called "open commerce ecosystem". Citi and MasterCard are Google's launch partners and now Visa, Discover and American Express have also made available their NFC specifications so that they are included in the list sometime soon. Users can also use this app with Google Prepaid Card if they don't have a valid Citi MasterCard. Google Prepaid Card is a virtual card powered by MasterCard and Money Network®. Though for a limited time, Google is giving it's first new users $10 USD on the Google Prepaid Card upon activation of the card.

The question is, are the customers ready for replacing their traditional wallets just now? Wallets have been in use for decades and it takes time for the non-tech-savvy users for getting used to something so new. And there aren't enough retailers for Google wallet. Moreover, in it's first release, Google wallet is available only to US users.

The official release video as narrated by Rob von Behren and Jonathan Wall, Founding Engineers of Google Wallet is here:
