The GNOME developers are busy developing a new notification system which will replace the current implementation of the notification tray in their upcoming stable release of GNOME 3.14. Among the changes proposed for the next iteration, we find number of improvements to the notification manager. Current implementation of notification system is slow & buggy, and therefore the codebase of notification manager is being revised. Most of the existing code will be removed to ensure greater stability of the new notification system. In GNOME 3.14, access to the notifications will be easier and we are going to see great integration of the applications by default.

As you can notice, the new notification system in the GNOME Shell will easily allow users to operate the integrated applications. For example, from the notification center one can reply to message, change track to previous, next & would be able to pause/stop it. One can operate notes, appointments and even access their received unread emails from notification center. The new notification center will also include the system tray with integration of applications such as Dropbox, Skype, Radio tray, etc. so you can quickly access some of its features.

Note that the designs are not yet final. The final freeze is likely to arrive by the end of September. These are mere mockups & code is miles away from working. So, testing the new notification system is not yet possible. You can checkout more mockups by GNOME design team from <a href="https://github.com/gnome-design-team/gnome-mockups/tree/master/notifications" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">gnome-mockups/notifications at master · gnome-design-team/gnome-mockups · GitHub</a>.
