Presently General motor is trying to gain grounds in Indian market in the sale of small car market. The American automaker is aiming to increase to increase the sales volume of these small cars. For this, the company has designed a 1000cc diesel engine which is also its globally smallest diesel engine manufactured ever. The new engine called the 1.0 XSDE Smartech engine was developed by GM's engineers in Europe after which it was brought to India and modified to suit Indian road conditions. The modification works took place at General Motors Technical center in Bangalore. The new engine is so modified that it gives a mileage of 24 Kilometers per liter. The three cylinder engine boasts of a common rail fuel injection system. It is also equipped with an electronically controlled throttle body making it still greener.

According to the company's sales figures till now, GM manages to sell around 35,000-36,000 Gasoline fed Beats per annum. Once the modified version enters market the company anticipates an additional 4,000 models to be sold per month. After the recently announced petrol hike by Government, per liter cost of Gasoline stands at INR 63.70 while Diesel is priced at INR 41.29 per liter. This significant mismatch between prices will be a ruling factor for a big chunk of Indian middle class. The new car is priced at INR 429,000. The car comes with a three year/ 100,000 Kilometers warranty. Although, the car is made to look economical, the automaker has not compromised with the safety and comfort of its customers.

Announcing company's short term goals, Karl Slym, president and MD of GM India, said that GM is planning to roll out five new vehicles over next 18 months in India. The other models under GM's Chevrolet brand include Spark, Aveo sedans and Hatchback and Tavera multi-utility vehicles.
