From trade to engineering ?

In the US I hear to work in the trades you need only do a 2 year course

Would it be a likely and acceptable career path for a person to go from say, plumbing or welding, or some other trade to continue studying some form of engineering.

Would this type of path be accepted by the white collar engineering community ?
