Formlabs Develops 3D-Printer That Employs Laser Found In Blu-Ray Player

MIT researches led startup Formlabs has formulated a 3D printer that employs stereolithography (SLA) technology, something that's quite usual in expensive high-end printers. SLA proces include lasers curing the resin in microscopic layers, and the Form 1 3D printer- the first 'prosumer' 3D printer- achieves this by making use of same kind of laser found in Blu-ray player, and yields layers of 25 microns (ten microns thicker than some super-advanced printers presently). All this in your home, for a very affordable US $3,000 (even lesser, actually).

The resin required costs $150 per liter, and shall come in various colors, elasticities and transparencies. The incorporated Form software derives .STL files, and automatically leads to the support structures needed to print those parts standing out.
