Recently #-Link-Snipped-# officials expressed their opinion about bringing in non turbocharged engines in the technology scenario. The question might be a little tricky as engine capabilities are increased by a turbocharger. This time, the auto major wants to take out the complex arrangement of turbine integrated with the engine. This may prove to be a good decision unless replaced by an equally efficient technology. The engine will soon be introduced in China.

In #-Link-Snipped-# which we may see in the future, #-Link-Snipped-# are trying to have Gasoline direct injection technology (GDI) and twin independent cam shaft variable timing (Ti-VCT). With efficiency, it is also expected to give high battery performance. The development is expected to start a new trend with the automobile companies.

The GDI involves high pressure (200 Bar) fuel injection directly into the cylinders. It means precise control of the quantity of fuel injected. The droplets are 0.02mm in diameter. With GDI, we do not need to mix the fuel with air at the inlet port. The technology makes sense as we have improved volumetric efficiency and avoidance of knock.

Similar are the advantages of Ti-VCT. It makes the valve timing accurate there by taking the timing of opening of inlet and exhaust valve much towards ideal. #-Link-Snipped-# to adjust the 'valve overlap' continuously ensuring that the engine operates at optimum ratings of power and fuel. With Ti-VCT, engine shows 7% improvement in peak power, 5% in peak torque and 4.5% in fuel economy. Even the internal EGR (emission gas reduction) is improved amounting to less emission of NOx, Hydrocarbons and hence smog.

We are seeing much of innovation in the engine design nowadays. Auto giants are experimenting with their present engines in quality and quantity to roll out more efficient vehicles in the market. For example, #-Link-Snipped-# in India. However they are mostly limited to increasing or decreasing the intake capacity of powerplants. A non-turbocharged engine requires a major innovation. This is touted to be as successful as EcoBoost engines. Let us see it once it is employed in Chinese #-Link-Snipped-#.
