FDA Approves Second Sight's Argus II Artificial Retina For Use
Second Sight, a company which markets implantable visual prosthetics, has struck major success by winning approval from Federal Drug Administration (FDA) for its product, Argus II. This bionic eye is purported as a treatment of late stage Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP).

The system sits on a pair of glasses which have a miniature camera mounted in between. After the scene is processed, the implant on the eye receives the instructions and transfers it to the retina. The bionic eye is meant to replace the disease-damaged photoreceptors of the eye with tiny chips that convert light into electrical signals, so as to stimulate the optic nerve.
Argus II is a revolutionary product for a population fighting degenerative eye diseases but the competition is not nigh. An Israel based company is developing a product, Bio-Retina for the same target and has delivered 600-pixel clarity in trials, according to sources. Cornell University is also reported to be working on a similar electronic device.
